Aquatic Programs
Wendy Prystupa
My name is Wendy Prystupa. I am the Aquatics Manager at Lakeshore Athletic Club. My focus is teaching swimming to kids of all ages, whether that swimmer is an infant graduating from our Infant Aquashrimps program, an athlete wanting to cross-train more effectively, a world-class athlete competing in Triathlons, or the ‘more-experienced’ individual wanting to add swimming to their lifestyle or work-out.
As an athlete who has competed and coached at the highest levels, I can help all swimmers improve their technique and increase their fun in the water.

SWIMAMERICA
The World’s Best Swim Lessons
Developed by a committee of the American Swim Coaches Association (ASCA) to provide the finest learn-to-swim progression in the world, the SwimAmerica program is offered through Lakeshore Athletic Club. Our Program Director and coaching staff have been professionally accredited to offer your child the very best in teaching and training. Two phrases describe SwimAmerica: “goal-driven” and “technique-oriented.” The program is based on skills acquisition. Children are taught in small groups. Goal-driven means that we have well-defined skills that represent “graduation points” to the next station in the system. ‘Technique-oriented’ means that emphasis is given to learning proper stroke techniques from the very beginning. SwimAmerica is available for members and non-members, ages 3-13.

STROKE SCHOOL
Swimmers who have passed Station 8 in SwimAmerica or have previous swim team experience, are encouraged to participate in Stroke School. The goal of this program is improvement in the four competitive strokes, Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke and Freestyle. Starts, turns and race strategy are also covered. The emphasis in Stroke School is swimming technique; not yardage or endurance.

LAKESHORE WHITECAPS
Swimmers who have passed Station 8 in SwimAmerica are eligible to join our year-round,
USA-Swimming team, the Lakeshore Whitecaps. Newly formed in November of 2009, the mission statement for this competitive team is as follows: It is the mission of the Lakeshore Whitecaps to serve as the continuation of our established SwimAmerica program. We will continue the teaching of proper competitive swimming techniques while promoting the values of sportsmanship, respect, individual achievement and personal responsibility in order to produce well rounded individuals of the highest moral character in and out of the pool. The emphasis of the swim team workouts will be technique first, then endurance.

AquaShrimps
This gentle water adaptation class is for children 9 months to 3 years. Kids work through the beginning skills of swimming in the loving arms of their parent. The class teaches the same skills that we introduce to our Level One swimmers in the SwimAmerica group lesson program. There will be lots of repetition because that’s how children learn best. We use songs, rhymes and games to teach these skills.

Self-Rescue Swimming – Water Safety for Children – Infant Swimming Resource
Infant Swimming Resource teaches children basic skills like swimming and floating and reinforces them with confidence in using survival techniques.
Infant Swimming Resource (ISR), an organization that teaches babies and young children water safety and swimming, will hold an aquatic self-rescue swim session, mornings, at the Lakeshore Athletic Club from September 13th to October 22nd.
Founded in 1966, ISR integrates swimming skills that are age appropriate for young children, teaching them to save their own lives, while building the confidence that can lead to a lifetime of fun in and around the water.
The ISR lesson experience is a comprehensive and daily (Monday-Friday) six-week program where each 10 minute lesson is customized for the child as they are safely guided through the learning process.
Infants ages six-to-12 months will learn to hold their breath under water, roll onto their backs and float unassisted.
Children one-to-six years old learn how to hold their breath underwater, swim with their head down and eyes open, roll onto their back to float, rest and breathe, and roll back over to resume swimming until they reach the side of the pool and can crawl out. Once skilled, children practice these techniques fully clothed, in preparation for the emergency every parent hopes their child never encounters.
Drowning is the number one cause of death for children under four. While this statistic is alarming, drowning is preventable. ISR recommends building layers of protection between your child and the water. These layers are essential because the reality is that most children do not drown because of a lack of supervision, it is a lapse in supervision, and it only takes a momentary distraction for a curious toddler to get out of your sight.

MASTERS WORKOUT & BEGINNING SWIMMING WORKOUT
Masters is an age-group (18+), not an ability level! The Masters workout is for those adults who want to get the maximum out of their swim time. This class is free and the times for the class are located on the Group Exercise Schedule. Participants must have a basic understanding of freestyle.
Beginning Swimming Workout is just that. The coach will go over the basics of how to workout in the water. Swimming jargon will be explained and fundamentals of the strokes will be covered during the workout. This class is free and the times for the class are located on the Group Exercise Schedule. Knowledge of freestyle is helpful.
SMALL GROUP INSTRUCTION FOR ADULTS
Don’t limit the water sports you can do in your lifetime!
Swimming is a skill every person should learn. Our Aquatics staff teaches these small group lessons for the very beginning and advanced beginning adults. Similar to our SwimAmerica group lesson program for children, technique and safety are the cornerstones of our teaching progression. Competence in freestyle and backstroke are the primary goals of this program. Lessons are available for members and non-members; student to teacher ratio maximum is 1:4.
